This morning I stood with 40 other people as we took a stand against offshore oil drilling. We met at the 51st St. beach in Lincoln City, Oregon and we clasped hands, literally drawing a line in the sand for what we believe in. None of us knew each other. We met on the beach this morning. We came from as far away as Alaska, Arizona, Wyoming and Tennesee and we came as close as a walk across the street. We gathered together, formed a line and held hands from noon to 12:15 pm. While we stood there holding hands, some of us sang, some of us chatted with the people next to us, some of us silently looked out at the white sands and blue ocean in front of us.
And, why? Why did we do this? Because we, like millions of others have watched the BP oil spill disaster in horror. Watching an entire ocean be soiled, possibly beyond repair....thousands of sea creatures die....commercial fisherman losing their livelihood....all for oil. Oil to make one company billions of dollars at the expense of an ocean that belongs to us all and to the generations that come after us. We watched and we felt helpless...but we knew we had to take a stand and send a message that we can not tolerate this destruction of our planet any longer. That something must change.
These 40 strangers who met on the beach this morning were part of the global Hands Across the Sand event. 700 events in the US alone, as well as dozens of others around the globe...it was the world's largest protest against offshore oil drilling and support of development of clean energy. Our hope is our leaders will see that we are a global community of people with a powerful message to send...I hope, and I pray, they saw, they listened, and they will act.
